CSA Vegetables for the Summer

This week we sent off our cheque to the Ferme Mange-Tout for the weekly vegetable baskets that we’ll get starting in June. By subscribing now we saved a bit of money.

If you’re not familiar with the Community Supported Agriculture concept, the idea is that a bunch of people prepay a farmer for something, in this case vegetables, and these people take the risk of farming along with the farmer. So, of there’s some sort of crop failure then our money might be wasted, but most of the time, (virtually all of the time from what I can gather), the crops are good, and we get a weekly delivery of fresh, local, organic vegetables every week.

Each week is different, and we don’t have a lot of control over which vegetables we get, so we get to try new things. Last year we ate, for the first time, broccoli rabe, celery root, and some squashes that I had never seen before. This year I’m looking forward to another summer of eating local plants.

  • What is Choices That Matter?

I'm a guy named John, and I do most of the writing around here. I went from a really active lifestyle to a really inactive lifestyle very quickly and my body is noticing. On top of that I'm worried about what's happening to our planet, so, I'm trying to do something about it.

For Christmas I received the book Food Matters, which I found very interesting and inspired me to start changing. Check out my first post for the beginning of the story.
